The Background
September 12, 2007
The Ring and The Badge is based upon a film script of the same name. The blog itself is a book, with each new post a new part of the story. All new posts are the first draft of the book, even though the story itself is not a work in progress.
If you do not begin at the beginning of the blog, it will probably seem a bit odd to you, so I would recommend you go back into the archives and read from the beginning.
The story itself is in the style of the western genre, set in the late eighteen hundreds and alternates back and forth between the first-person perspective of one of the heroes, Sheriff Tim Wheeler, and third-person perspective. The main characters are these:
Tim Wheeler, Sheriff of Clear Creek County, Missouri, early twenties.
David Carnegie, Deputy Sheriff of Clear Creek County, Missouri and a former convict, late twenties.
Alan Wheeler, Deputy Sheriff of Clear Creek County, Missouri, Tim’s brother, early twenties.
Bill Carnegie, a little-known outlaw, father and chief enemy of David Carnegie, late fifties.
Leland Carnegie, card-shark, trickster, scoundrel, slick-dressing brother of David Carnegie, late twenties.
Mike Carnegie, slightly younger brother of Leland and David Carnegie, also involved in the family’s no-good schemes.
Tad Carnegie, brother of Bill Carnegie. Drunk.

fyi, I’m not editing. (not like you didn’t already know this, but I’m saying it anyway–as usual) my comments are just my thoughts and responses to the story. they’re what I’d be thinking if I had the story in book form in my lap and was reading it at home or what I’d be asking my students if I were reading it out loud to them. Hopefully my comments will make you grin a little as you know I’ll find out later the answers to my questions.
Thanks for letting me “think aloud.”
